Upon the European discovery of the area, communities began to evolve in many locations in Bertie Township. Some developed into bustling commercial centres. Others remained a small clutch of neighbours around a store and post office. Over the years communites merged and in 1970, the Town of Fort Erie was formed into what it is today.
